A visit to the Astor Hotel Museum is like being warped into a time travelling device back to 150 years ago or so, when foreigners started settling in Tianjin and the concessions were being established. It’s hard to imagine what Tianjin was like back then, but the old photos, paintings, equipments, utensils, and eventually the general aura of the museum bring a wistful memoir of the young Tianjin welcoming foreign guests and visitors.

In 1996, The Astor Hotel, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Tianjin was listed as a national cultural heritage site. This acknowledges Astor as one of Tianjin’s greatest landmarks. The Astor’s re-opening on August 2010, this time as part of the Luxury Collection of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Group, included the opening of the Astor Hotel Tianjin Museum that stands inside the hotel. The museum will take you on a trip down memory lane as it shows 150 fruitful years of history, from 1863 when the hotel opened, until the present day as an elegant and vibrant landmark fronting the Haihe River.

The picturesque Otis elevator greets you when you arrive in the museum. This elevator was the first of its kind in China and back then, its existence alone signified artistic and cultural development for Tianjin. An adjacent stairway takes you to the underground level where significant historical events of Tianjin are reflected and recorded. Inside, you’ll find walls decked with dozens of postcards, then magnificent canvasses of Tianjin decades ago, including that of the first Astor Hotel. Next, you’ll find the arrangement of the old hotel rooms and ballrooms, including furniture that has been kept after all these years. There were also fine chinas, antique decors, and many other exquisite artefacts reminiscent of the hotel’s long and joyous life.

As the centre of Tianjin’s throbbing social life, the museum also shows photos of famous and influential personalities who have stayed in the Astor Hotel: US President Herbert Hoover, Prime Minister Zhou Enlai, Tianjin governor Li Hongzhang, Peking Opera singer Mei Lanfang, and many others.

Indeed, the Astor Hotel Tianjin and its museum are important parts of Tianjin’s growth and this year, as the hotel celebrates 150 fruitful years of service, a visit to its museum would be a great way to learn about its enduring existence as well as Tianjin’s exuberant growth.
