You guys have to admit it, you couldn’t live without women. Rightly so, women have this moment to boast as International Women’s Day happens on the 8th of this month. Tianjin Plus celebrates with women all over the world for this special day, and as a treat, covers this secret to beauty that has been discovered as early as the Bronze Age – the enduring use of Henna.

Henna is a tall shrub that’s a native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Southern Asia and Africa. It’s called Mehindi in Sanskrit and has been mentioned in Indian Court records as an instrument for hair dyeing in as early as 400 BC. It was also found in the medical texts of Ebers Papyrus in Ancient Egypt and in 14th century Syria as a medical herb.

Beauty and Cosmetic
Lawsone, Henna's colouring property, is an organic compound that has an affinity for bonding with protein. A paste of ground Henna is placed in contact with the skin from a few hours to overnight for skin dyeing. The stain can last a few days to a month depending on an individual’s skin type and the quality of the paste.
Aside from skin dyeing, Henna can also be used to dye the hair, fingernails, leather, silk and wood. As a cosmetic hair dye, it has been used for more than 6,000 years and is believed to have started in Ancient Egypt.

Henna also has anti-fungal qualities and is good use as preservative for leather and cloth. Aside from these uses, the flowers of this plant have been used to make perfumes while the plant itself repels some insects and mildew.

Body Art
It is safe to say that Henna is a ‘wonder plant’ with all its fine qualities and uses. But this great plant isn’t just used for hair and skin dyeing and the likes, it’s also known for its remarkable ability to create body art, or in what is popularly known as a ‘Henna Tattoo’.

While most of us hesitate to get permanent body tattoos, especially with the needles and pain, and the awful thought of one day deciding to remove them, Henna rises as a good option. Firstly, it doesn’t give any pain. Zilch! Secondly, its natural elements are good for the skin. And lastly, it’s gone in a few days or weeks so you still have flawless skin when the Henna fades. In many countries, Henna tattoos are applied to create a statement, whether a fashionable one or simply to imply meaning, like in marriage or other celebrations. Finely detailed body art, with designs that range from alphabets, numerals, to flowers, animals, and many splendid tribal designs can be done with Henna.

However, do you know that you can actually get Henna tattoo in Tianjin? Yes – in Tianjin! Read on…

As a lover of intricate Henna tattoo designs, Laila went to India and studied the art of Henna designing for several months. “I’ve been interested in designing tattoos with Henna ever since I was in Dubai where I lived for several years. So after learning the art in India, I’m bringing this wonderful Mehindi here in Tianjin where me and my husband now live”, Laila shared. With lots of intricate patterns available, one would never run out of ideas on what design to have. Henna application may take 5-15 minutes (depending on the design), and about 10-20 minutes to dry.

Aside from Henna tattoos, the salon also offers hair dyeing, skin treatment, nail art, hair waxing, make up and even classes in Henna tattoo designing from Laila herself or from Divya Lakshmi, one of the salon’s tattoo designers..
