Pole Dancing Sensation in Tianjin

It has to be said that pole dancing is one of the more controversial fitness activities. But perceptions are fast changing and this incredible style of dance is gradually being regarded as an art form in its own right. As for the dancers, Tianjin is home to one of the best in the business. World stage competitor Eefun is chief instructor at the Samjoy dance studio. We are proud to be able to share some of her thoughts with our readers.

Firstly, please can you tell us about your dance school?

The school was established in 2007. We teach pole dancing primarily but we also offer other forms of dance, including Jazz and modern forms, so we cater to a wide audience.

How long have you been pole dancing and when did you start?

I started dancing when I was 8 years old. I learned ethnic, modern and ballet dancing. It has been a lifelong passion for me. I started pole dancing in 2006 and it has been my main forte ever since.

Can you tell us about your biggest achievements so far?

As a dancer, my biggest achievement has to be breaking into the top 24 at the 2011 Pole Dancing World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Competing internationally is an incredible experience. As the manager and chief instructor of the school, I am proud to have encouraged many great dancers from other forms to try pole dancing. Some of my students have won prestigious awards and it is very rewarding for me to facilitate their progress.

Do you have any plans to expand your company in Tianjin and other parts of China?

We currently have this school and another in Harbin, in the north of China, so we should work on these two schools first. Eventually we hope to reach more people and expand but for now it is important to build a solid base.

As you know, pole dancing is often associated with a certain kind of environment and entertainment. How can you change people鈥檚 views on this?

Most people, in China and elsewhere, are quite conservative so it is hard to change people鈥檚 attitudes. Many are nervous about trying pole dancing because they are afraid of what their friends and family may say. However, we can encourage people to participate and realise that what we do can be a non-erotic art form and a great way to get into shape. I see people鈥檚 ideas change when they take my classes and I hope more people will be encouraged to give it a try.

What do you see the future of this kind of dance being like?

The demand is certainly increasing and pole dancing for fitness and fun is definitely becoming more popular. In China now there are about 200,000 people learning to do it. The world is starting to place more importance on this form of dance. Perhaps one day it will be an Olympic sport in the same category as other gymnastic events.

So as a fitness activity, how does pole dancing compare to other forms of exercise?

Pole dancing gives you a unique full body workout. Other exercises and styles of dance place less emphasis on all-round strength, balance and flexibility. I think people who usually do other fitness activities will be surprised by the positive effects pole dancing has on their bodies over time.

To start pole dancing do you need to be a certain kind of person?

Obviously it would be easier if you already have a dance, or perhaps acrobatics/gymnastics, background. People who have never done anything like this before can certainly develop over time but it will, of course, take longer. Also, I have often heard people say that women are more suitable for this kind of dancing than men. In fact this is not true. Men are very much capable of being just as good- if not better.

What is your advice to people who are considering trying something new to get into shape?

Come and give it a go! Don鈥檛 listen to negative views because if you do then you will miss out on a great fitness experience. You should show others some footage of how artistic and skilful this kind of dancing is. Maybe you should try to take a class with some of your friends to give you more confidence.
