Nightlife at Harry鈥檚 Bar

Huge Harley Davidson motorbikes welcome you before entering Harry’s Bar. These are statement bikes that speak of what kind of ride you’re in for– a night of fun, great live music and dancing!
Harry’s is a frequent hangout for those who want to unwind after a busy day and just relax with, say, a cold drink. Spacious with huge comfortable seats, navigating around the bar is easy and a definite plus. The menu has an abundant selection of drinks with small, enjoyable snacks. If tasty kebabs is your craving for the night, the bar terrace has a barbecue station- just the perfect choice with your glass of beer.

Besides these elements, what’s notable about Harry’s is their live music offering from the house band – Night Act. The band consists of eight Filipino band members - Ogie Esguerra (drums, band leader, bar operation manager) Eva Macalintal, Lucy Caperina, Maynard Depio (vocalists), Jayris Dalena (keyboard), Art Atuel (base) and Servel Sanchez (guitar). Night Act plays familiar pop songs magical enough to drive everyday blues away. The resident DJ, DJ Mama, also has plenty of mixes on the go as you hit the dance floor.

Tianjin Plus
spoke with Night Act’s band leader and bar operation manager, Ogie Esguerra, about Harry’s Bar’s offering to the Tianjin nightlife scene.

Bands in other bars have themes and play different kinds of music every night. Is it the same with your band?

Since we play four sets a night, we usually start with slow music and play danceable hits as the night progresses. Unlike other bars, we don’t have specific themes each night and our sets are based solely on the crowd of the night.

Talking about crowd, specifically what audience are you trying to draw in here?

There are already many bars in Tianjin that cater to the youngsters like students and people in their 20’s. Our bar targets a different crowd. We target people in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Those who love to unwind over good beer with friends while listening to live music or business people who love hanging out with their business partners after office hours.

What kind of preparations do you make before hitting the stage?

We do the lining up of songs. Basically, we look at the crowd and assess what kind of songs we should play. Sometimes we’re in the middle of our set when some Koreans arrive. What we do is we adjust our set of songs to welcome them. I automatically include some Korean songs and signal the band members what song it will be.

Aside from English songs, what other songs do you play?

Since our followers come from different countries, we can also play some Korean songs, German, Spanish, Chinese songs and many others. We have many Korean followers so we know a number of Korean songs and sometimes, we even ask our guests to sing with us, if they are willing.

How do you keep your guests entertained?

We mingle with them and let them feel at home in our bar, to let them know that we are their friends and that after their long day at work, it is worth visiting our bar to listen to us.

What would you like to say to those people who’d like to visit Harry’s one of these days?

Come to our bar and enjoy your type of music here. We have a variety of songs for you and we’ll make sure you enjoy your visit. This month, Harry’s is going  a step further by opening the restaurant so we also offer lunch and dinner now, which means it’s not just drinks and music but also good food.
