Mexican Food Makes a Comeback in Style

Since El Fogoncito closed in 2009, Beijing has been craving great Mexican food and the newly opened Q Mex seems to be moving towards the right direction. This colourful restaurant explores Mexican cuisine beyond fajitas and burritos and offers a wide range of traditional dishes with good quality ingredients. The food is definitely more authentic and sophisticated than that on offer from the better known, Lugas or The Saddle Cantina. The staff are also friendly and can speak English.

As soon as you sit down, expect a big bowl of chips and fresh salsa. To start, we tried Empanadas de Chorizo (CNY 50), six little pieces of delicious pastry stuffed with meat and accompanied with salsa, perfect if you want to share. Taco al pastor (CNY 25) was pleasant but not memorable. It is only one portion, so at 25rmb a piece, it may leave you feeling a little short changed. For the main course you can choose from Tostadas, Ceviche, Enchiladas, Quesadillas and deliciously charred meats from the grill. All dishes are between 60 and 90 CNY and more than enough for even the sturdiest appetite. For a sweet tooth, try traditional favourites like Churros or Flan Caramel and you won´t be disappointed.

If you are on a night out, Q Mex offers a wide selection of tequilas but the cocktails, a creation of mixologist, Paul Mathew from Q Bar, are a highlight. House favourites are Zombie (CNY 55) a fabulous mix of rum, pineapple, lemon, lime and passion fruit syrup and the deadly Dia de Muertos (CNY 55), literally ‘Day of Dead’, which includes tequila, lime, ginger, berry syrup and blackberry liquor. They also have international beers and the house wine is CNY 40 per glass. The happy hour runs Monday to Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays they offer a brunch special from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. with free flow coffee, Margaritas or Bloody Marys!

One of the problems is its staff are new and not quite ready. So for a better experience, go in small groups. Q Mex was a pleasant surprise, so if you want to try some high-end Mexican, this is definitely a good choice!
