Beijing鈥檚 May Music Festivals



The weather is warming up and May is the month when we can enjoy being outside before the heatwave hits. So why not spend your May Holiday, or even just a weekend, relaxing on the grass at one of the many music festivals happening in Beijing?


Midi / 29 April – 1 May / Haidian Park or Shunyi

Midi is the festival for fans of underground music. They’re a little late in confirming a venue – posters say Haidian Park, but rumours abound that it’ll be in Shunyi. Wherever it ends up, there will be a total of four stages, two of which will showcase the best in local and international bands, one will be dedicated electronic stage run by Beijing label Yen, and a stage for up and coming student bands from the Midi School. The big names you’ll see include international acts Mos Def (US), Arcane Saints (AU), Little Fish (UK) and well as local heroes Residence A, Misandao and Multi-Ego. Full line up & location details:


Strawberry / 29 April – 1 May / Tongzhou Canal Park

Located out to the east of the city in picturesque Tongzhou Park, Strawberry is where the cool kids go to be seen this May Holiday. Strawberry definitely has the indiefans in mind with Blonde Redhead (US) and Laura Jansen (US) returning to China for their second visit, along with Jeans Team (DE) and Pitchturner (DE). Local acts include rock legend Xie TianXiao as well as favourites Carsick Cars and Hedgehog. Full line up & location details:


Dong Party Music Festival / 29 April – 1 May /Ditan Park

This peaceful park just north of the Lama Temple plays host to some of China’s best local and expat folk acts for one weekend each May. It’s the perfect opportunity to pack a picnic basket and find a shady spot to relax with the family or friends.Confirmed to play are Randy Abel Stable, Shanren and Afrokoko Roots amongst others. Hanggai World Music Festival / 5-6 May /Mako Livehouse

Inner Mongolian rockers Hanggai have taken their unique sound to world music festivals in Europe and Australasia, but now it’s time they bring their festival friends home to visit. Over two days it’s a great chance to broaden your musical horizons and catch some of the most eclectic musicians, like Yemen Blues (Yemen), Rhythm of Rajastan (India), Windbone (Switzerland) as well as Hanggai and some of their Mongolian friends. China Music Valley / 18-20 May / Beijing Yuyang Ski Resort

The guys who brought Avril Lavigne and other big names last year are back again. Sticking to their skifield location, hopefully this year they’ve gotten over the logistical nightmares that plagued their first festival. Head along to see the likes of Jesus & Mary Chain (UK), Joss Stone (UK) and The White Lies (UK). Full line up & location details:


Intro / 26 May / 751 D Park, 798 Art District

For the electro fans Intro, China’s self proclaimed biggest outdoor electronic music festival, is back in it’s 798 base for another year. Organisers Acupuncture are promising 3 stages and over 80 artists this year, with the goal of promoting electronic music and digital art as a platform to connect people. Expect to dance to some of China’s best DJs as well as some big name International acts.Full line up & location details:
