Carnivore Diet: Essentials to Know

By Barbara Ross

TP 202009 NUTRITION 042019 saw the emergence of a rather extreme nutritional trend, the carnivore diet. It is a fairly straightforward name; carnivore means meat-eater, so the carnivore diet consists entirely of meat and animal products.

What is the purpose of a carnivore diet? And just how practical is it in the long run?

Let鈥檚 find out.

Here鈥檚 everything you need to know.

What exactly does a carnivore diet entail?

TP 202009 NUTRITION 02First things first; let鈥檚 talk about what kinds of foods are consumed in a carnivore diet. As mentioned before, it primarily involves meat, particularly fatty meat like beef, lamb, chicken, fish and pork. You can also consume other animal products like eggs, and low carb, low lactose dairy such as butter and cheese.

The diet excludes any kind of plant-based foods such as fruit, vegetables and even legumes, nuts, seeds etc..

For non-veggie lovers, this diet is good news, as it means you can consume all types of steak, ground beef, roast meat, and everything in between.

Why should you follow a carnivore diet?

TP 202009 NUTRITION 01The carnivore diet basically emerged from the very controversial belief that high-carb diets, popular with millennial generations, are the root cause of chronic diseases that are becoming rampant today. It is said that older or ancestral generations used to consume more whole meat and fish based foods, which was why they allegedly led healthier lifestyles.

The carnivore diet is becoming more popular because of a number of alleged benefits, including weight loss, improved digestion, optimization of hormone levels and mental clarity. There are also a few testimonials given by people who followed the diet that attest to its effectiveness in treating mental issues like anxiety and depression. However, none of these results have been confirmed through studies.

Benefits of the carnivore diet

TP 202009 NUTRITION 06Since the diet excludes anything other than meat and animal based products, it restricts the consumption of fatty and sugary foods like chocolates, cookies, candies, pastries and the like. As these are generally foods that are high in calories and cause spikes in blood sugar, eliminating them helps in maintaining a balanced diet.

Additionally, since meat and fish are high in protein, they help you feel fuller, and provide wholesome nutrients. They also limit your food intake in general, which can help you lose weight gradually. Proteins are also known to improve your metabolic rate, which can further help you burn more calories.

Adverse effects of the diet

TP 202009 NUTRITION 07One downside of the carnivore diet is that it restricts carbohydrate consumption. While it is good to restrict carbs to a certain extent, your body does need the nutrients. Hence, completely eliminating them would prove to be unhealthy in the long run.

In addition, animal products are always high in saturated fats and cholesterol, and may increase your risk of heart diseases. It also leads to certain other problems like excessive sodium consumption, high blood pressure and increased risk of cancer.

Should you follow the carnivore diet?

The carnivore diet, as you can see, is extremely restrictive and comes with a lot of potential adverse effects. In addition, the claimed benefits have not been confirmed through studies. Therefore, you should ask yourself whether this diet will help you lead a healthy life? The answer would be no. A well-rounded and balanced diet with plant-based foods is still the best.
