Liangjiacun Village

姊佸鏉

TP 202009 AROUND TIANJIN Liangjiacun 01The tranquil village of Liangjiacun is built into the side of a mountain and is now scantily populated due to most people of working age having gone to find employment elsewhere. This leaves the village as a peaceful location where visitors can stroll along the flagstone paths to look at the courtyard homes with their distinctive ridged roofs, separated by tiny alleyways, just as they have stood for centuries.

The villagers that remain are very hospitable and will often invite strangers in for a cup of tea. One old building, covered in cobwebs and weeds and clearly now disused, was once an ancestral temple. Looking closely, it is possible to see the faint markings of calligraphy and carvings showing the meaning of happiness.

Tianchangzhen Town

澶╅暱闀

TP 202009 AROUND TIANJIN Tianchang villageThe old town of Tianchangzhen is located close to National Highway 307 and is in stark contrast to Liangjiacun. The contrast between the two is felt more in Tianchangzhen as it is a former commercial hub of Jingxing County and is still busy with its market, shops and restaurants. The town is enclosed within its ancient wall, with gates serving three entrances. One gate is in need of repair, the second has seen a complete rebuild, while the third dates back to the Qing Dynasty and has been preserved in its original form. There is a small temple on the wall鈥檚 parapet, with a colourful, traditionally styled Chinese roof. There are also the ruins of a temple within the town.

There are numerous historical buildings to see here, including the former residence of a Minister of State from the Ming Dynasty. The river that separates the town from the National Highway is spanned by an ancient bridge, protected as many ancient structures are by weathered lion statues at either end of the bridge.

Xiaolongwo Village

灏忛緳绐濇潙

TP 202009 AROUND TIANJIN xiaolongwoThis ancient village is separated from the new town of the same name by National Highway 307. The old village covers about one third of the total area of the village, and the houses built into the hillside are made of stone from the Taihang Mountains in a traditional Chinese style. Many of the old buildings contain sheds built as outhouses or barns, originally housing the families鈥 livestock.

Walking through the ancient village is like navigating a maze, and visitors could easily get lost in the narrow alleyways. An interesting sight here is an old theatre complete with costumes and props.

Just outside the village is a group of grottos containing statues of Buddhist figures, many of which are exposed to the harsh weather of the region and show signs of age. Towards the top of the cliff are some caves with statues, including one of the Buddhist figures of Guanyin, in better condition than those left open to the weather.

Daliangjiang Village

澶ф姹熸潙

TP 202009 AROUND TIANJIN daliangjiangThe village of Daliangjiang is considered by many people to be the most beautiful of Jingxing County鈥檚 ancient villages. It radiates ancient architecture from the moment you arrive through the village entrance, which is an arched doorway guarded by a stele dating from the Qing Dynasty鈥檚 Emperor Yongzheng. The village gate was originally intended to be the tallest structure in the village, but as the gateway is at the foot of the mountain, the houses built of stone gradually ascend their way up the mountain side, dwarfing the gate below.

The village is a scene of chickens squawking, dogs yapping, seniors basking in the sun, children playing, and smoke rising from the chimneys of several houses. The polished cobblestone streets are testimony to the long history of the village, having been trodden and ridden on for centuries. There is a small theatre stage constructed of stone where performances are occasionally given, and the residence of a former examination scholar, showing several interconnecting courtyards, is on occasion open to visitor.

L眉jiacun Village

鍚曞鏉

TP 202009 AROUND TIANJIN lvjiacunThe ancient village of Lujiacun is located in a valley tightly packed between mountain slopes. It is a peaceful village with several centuries-old houses. The village takes its name from the Lu brothers who lived in a house at the entrance to the village. This house, the oldest one here, dates back to the Ming Dynasty. A dug out cave was once used as an oil mill, but has recently fallen into disrepair through being disused.

The peaceful surroundings that appear to come from a scene out of a painting do not reflect the period of the village鈥檚 history when all was not so tranquil. In February 1938, during the war against Japanese aggression, the commanders of the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army were stationed here. From the now tranquil courtyards, they ordered the ambush of 180 Japanese soldiers. Many young people from this area joined the Eighth Route Army, some losing their lives in battle.

Diducun Village

鍦伴兘鏉

TP 202009 AROUND TIANJIN diducunDiducun Village is located close to Niangziguan, described as the ninth pass of the Great Wall. It is a remote village and three gates in the wall lead onto the village square. The name of Diducun means 鈥榯he village where the emperor crossed the river.鈥 A local legend reveals that Emperor Liu Xiu of the Eastern Han Dynasty of 25鈥220 AD crossed the Weishui River close to this point. An old temple in need of some repair, the Goddess of Mercy Temple, is located to the east of the village and stories link it back to the Sui Dynasty of 581鈥619, although its style of architecture is more reminiscent of the Ming or Qing Dynasty鈥檚. Many of the ancient houses of the village have sadly been abandoned and left to nature.

Yujiacun Village

浜庡鏉

TP 202009 AROUND TIANJIN yujiacunThe architectural style of the stone houses of this region of the Taihang Mountains is noticeable in the village of Yujiacun and dates from the Ming Dynasty. Yujiacunwas built by descendants of Yu Qian, who was an officer loyal to the Ming Dynasty in addition to being a poet. In his writing he once wrote; 鈥淚 am not afraid of anything, even being burned, because I want to be an honest man.鈥 He heroically took part in protecting the Forbidden City during a siege in the 16th century by the Oirat Mongols.

Yu Qian鈥檚 oldest grandson left Beijing along with his family during Emperor Chenghua鈥檚 reign, moving to what is now the village of Yujiacun. Twenty-four generations of the Yu have lived here so far. Those first settlers dug quarries and carved stone tools, using the local stone to build their homes and terraced fields.

This ancient village requires payment by means of an entrance ticket. There is a cool and refreshing pavilion at the entrance to the village, which is a replica in stone of a wooden two-storey pavilion. It is a key cultural relic and is protected by the state. The village is also listed as a museum of stone art. Within an area of 0.25 square kilometres, there is a total of 3,500 metres of stone paths and more than 4,000 stone houses, of which more than 1,000 still retain their original structures dating from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Over 90% of the village鈥檚 inhabitants are descendants of the Yu family, and through them the traditional lifestyle has been preserved .
