The Wonderland with Picturesque Spots

TP 202007 CHINA 01Chishui Falls is a picturesque location in the Chishui scenic area, in the northwestern part of Guizhou province, China, and is the top attraction in Zunyi city. It is a subtropical zone blessed with several scenic spots, including more than 4,000 waterfalls, bamboo forests, creeks, ancient towns, tree ferns, rare animals, etc. The Chishui Falls is the second-largest waterfall in China after the Huangguoshu Waterfall.


The scenic spots in Chishui are exceptionally enthralling for the presence of Alsophila Spinulosa, a species in the Cyatheaceae family that grows up to 4.5鈥5 m, and dates back to the Jurassic period. Most of the scenic spots in Chishui are Danxia landforms and are included on the UNESCO natural heritage sites list, and the area is well-preserved because of its endangered flora and fauna.


The Danxia landform comprises red cliffs, and red beds of land spread over more than 1,000 kilometres. Chishui Danxia has two sectors; western and eastern. The western sector is large and has scenic spots, a national park, etc., while the eastern sector is famous for Buddha rock, scenic areas, bamboo forests, etc..


During the summer, the relatively cooler climate of the area attracts people from nearby towns to buy or rent vacation homes in Chishui. The best seasons to visit Chishui are autumn, spring, and summer. The scenic spots in Chishui charge visitors less than CNY100.




How to reach Chishui

TP 202007 CHINA 03There are several options to reach Chishui from Beijing and Shanghai. Chishui is 2,010.6 km from Beijing and 1,859.8 km from Shanghai.

The journey requires different methods of traveling options that include air, rail, and road. Self-driving would be a bit complicated and tiring.

By Air

As there is no airport in Chishui, you have to take a flight from the major cities to the nearest airport, Luzhou (LZO). Then, from the airport, you have to depend on subways, trains, and taxis to get to your destination.

Taking a flight from Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) or Beijing Daxing (PKX) to Luzhou (LZO) and a taxi to Chishui is the easiest mode of transport to reach Chishui. Tourists can also take flights to other nearby airports such as Chongqing or Yibin, and from there they can take a bus or taxi to reach Chishui. Most of the other major airports cater to the airport nearest Chishui, and thus make the journey a hassle-free one.


By Train

The train journey is relatively comfortable and economical, though there are no direct train services to Chishui. Tourists from Beijing and other north-eastern sectors can travel to the nearest railway stations, Yongchuan East or Xingwen railway station, and from there travel to Chishui by taxi.


By Bus

The road network in China is excellent; however, there are no direct bus services from Beijing or Shanghai to Chishui. Direct buses are available to Chishui from Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport. Most of the other cities near Chishui offer bus services to Chishui Waterfalls.








Moving around Chishui Waterfalls

Buses and taxis are the common mode of transport to move around the city. Bus services cater exclusively to the different destinations within the proximity of Chishui Waterfalls and nearby cities. It is one of the most economical modes of transport, and CNY 1 can take you to any part of the town.

Taxis are a convenient mode of transport to move around the city. Fares start from CNY 2.5 (CNY 0.6 per half a kilometre) during the day, and CNY 5 (CNY 0.8 per half a kilometre) at night.

Chishui and Shizhangdong falls

TP 202007 CHINA 09Chishui Waterfall is located in the southern part of Chishui city, Guizhou Province. Chishui Fall, also called Shizhangdong waterfall, with a height of 212 metres and a width of 70 metres, is the biggest waterfall in Chishui and the second largest waterfall in China. The Water Curtain Cave behind the waterfall is one of the main attractions that you should not miss. At the Shizhangdong Scenic Spot, the water hitting the rocks and splitting into pearls is a visual treat. Dense forests engulf the spectacular surroundings consisting of mountains, Danxia landscapes, Alsophila Spinulosa (tree ferns), bamboo, etc..

Bing鈥檃n Ancient Town

TP 202007 CHINA 04Among the several ancient towns in Chishui, Bing'an Ancient Town is famous for its relics of the Red Army. The ancient town, encompassed by the Chishui river on three sides, was also the home of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This revolutionary city also has an exhibition hall focusing on the Red Army, and featuring the four-time crossing of the Chishui River by the Red Army, as well as several other memorials. It is located about 25 km from Chishui city.

Chishui Bamboo Park

TP 202007 CHINA 05Located 40 km from Chishui city and surrounded by mountains, the bamboo park is a vast sea of different varieties of bamboo. The lush park sprawls over 10,000 hectares and is known as the oxygen bar of China. The bamboo forest is the largest in the country, with an elevation of nearly 1,000 m. Chishui bamboo forest also features the Danxia landscape, waterfalls, and breath-taking scenery.

You can find more than 40 varieties of bamboo in the forest, and some bamboos are more than a thousand years old, such as the Eight Immortals Tree, Husband and Wife Tree, Couple Tree, etc.. The national bamboo forest park offers several other leisure activities and food service featuring bamboo, such as bamboo vessels, utensils, etc.

Guanhai Loui, the highest tower in the park, also offers a fantastic panoramic view of the bamboo forest.

Jurassic Park of China

TP 202007 CHINA 06The Jurassic Park of China is famous for the Danxia landscape and Alsophila spinulosa. It is situated 40 km from Chishui city. It is known as China鈥檚 Jurassic Park because of the tree fern, Cyathea spinulosa (flying spider monkey tree fern), or Alsophila Spinulosa, also known by different scientific names. The landscape is covered with tree ferns, known as living fossils, which date back to the Jurassic age.

The national nature reserve site has three main scenic spots; Gangou, Dashuigou, and Liangchahe.

This particular UNESCO world heritage site is also famous for its Guizhou wine and liquor festival held every year in Shizhangdong.

Red Stone Valley

TP 202007 CHINA 07The Red Stone Valley is located along the Huaping River in Datong Ancient Town, Chishui, and is famous for a wide variety of rare plants. The two main zones in the scenic spot, Danxia Stone Mural Gallery and Guanyin Gorge Primal eco-waterfall zone, make it a tourist attraction. The red hollow mountains, red cliffs, waterfalls, Danxia carving corridors, and fresco stone galleries provide some evocative experiences in the red stone valley. The Alpholisa Spinulosa forest, creatures like Danxia golden frogs, golden beetles, etc., and the warm wet climate take us back to the Mesozoic and Jurassic period.

Foguangyan Scenic Spot

TP 202007 CHINA 08The Foguangyan scenic spot, also known as the Wu Zhu Feng Scenic Spot, located 44 km from Chishui city, is one of the central attractions of Chishui National Scenic Spot. This ancient Danxia landform is a circular-shaped red Danxia cliff with a height of 234 metres and a width of 1,000 metres. The waterfall in the middle part of the red cliff makes the scenic area even more spectacular. It is known distinctively as the 鈥楥hishui鈥檚 unique,鈥 鈥榯he first garden of Danxia鈥 etc.

Chishui is worth visiting for its unique and fabulous landscapes. The endangered Alsophila Spinulosa, the age-old flora and fauna in the area, and the Danxia landforms take visitors back to the Jurassic and Mesozoic periods. The lush green bamboo forests, thousands of waterfalls, karst landforms, mountains and hills, and ancient towns are fascinating and unequalled.
