mmexport1593493079784 2A drone hovered above the ancient town walls of Bestown, Binhai, at 9:12 a.m. on the 6th of June, 2020. A gunshot echoed in the clear sky, and then the piercing screams of children and adults split the air as they scattered in all directions.

The fact is quite the opposite. It was the opening ceremony of the ALL FOR HOPE Charity Walkathon, organized by Tong Xin Youth Charity.

The event was more than a simple walkathon. In and around Bestown were 13 locations, each with a hidden pattern, which participants (nearly 50 families from a variety of nations) had to find and copy onto their custom-made 鈥減assports鈥. As the gunshot sounded the commencement, children rushed to the locations, screaming for their friends and family to catch up. Everyone was full of energy and excitement, and rightly so; after a long battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, families who had spent hours confined in their homes finally had a chance to savour the outdoors. Strolling through the historic grandeur of the ancient city walls next to the lake and exploring the hidden gems of Bestown, the participants had fun exercising and bonding with their friends.

247689143However, what made this occasion especially remarkable is that the ENTIRE event was planned by a group of juniors between the ages of 8 and 16! They are the members of Tong Xin Youth Charity: Xie Bo, Zhang Jiahao, Liu Pu, Li Ningxi, Zhang Zhan, Zhang Wenqi, Meng Chen, Pei Jiaan, Zhang Yueyan, Liu Huizhe, Zhao Yutong, Liu Ziqi, Tang Yuanwu, Yang Jiaming, Zhou Luozhu, and Eric Zhuang. Even more impressive is the fact that they started this charity all by themselves. Who are they, and what gave them the courage to start the charity?

816238734Xie Bo, president of 鈥淭ong Xin Youth Charity鈥, is 16 years old and has been studying in Singapore for six years. He returned to Tianjin this year due to the Covid-19 situation. On his way back from Singapore in mid-March, he was quarantined for 14 days at his transfer stop, Chengdu. During his stay in Chengdu, he witnessed the severity of the situation first-hand and also the gradual worsening of the COVID-19 pandemic as it spread around the world. Xie Bo realized how the situation would affect the world economy, and that many people would struggle to live through the crisis and its aftermath. After witnessing the brave individuals and groups that donated time, supplies and money to the COVID-19 relief effort, he decided to create a charity of his own. Having done lots of community service work in Singapore, he wanted to use his experience and challenge himself to share hope and love on a larger scale.

14552640121404163740On Xie Bo鈥檚 return to Tianjin, he met with his friend, Zhang Jiahao, together with whom he had attended the Our Kids camps. When he was only 9 years old, Jiahao had volunteered for a trip to teach at an impoverished village on the 4,000 m-above-ground Liang Shan in Yunnan Province. The students in the village faced many challenges in their daily lives just to get to school, and dropout rates were extraordinarily high. Many parents were unable to pay for school fees, so many children were unable to finish their education. The village school lacked qualified teachers, music teachers, sports teachers, and guidance counsellors. That鈥檚 why, when Jiahao and his group of volunteers organized the first ever sports day in the 20-year history of the school, he gave them hope for a better future. This trip inspired him to continue supporting the families with his yearly pocket money, and together with Xie Bo, he decided to form Tong Xin Youth Charity.

1518999301Since the official founding of Tong Xin Youth Charity on the 17th of May 2020, the 18 team members, who knew each other from camping trips with the Our Kids Club and Wind Explore, came together to plan the Walkathon. There was so little time! The members put in every bit of effort they could to tackle the different tasks鈥撯揹esigning walkathon material, designing and purchasing event shirts and caps, updating the 鈥淎ll for Hope鈥 public WeChat account, collecting and calculating costs, even crafting their own terms and agreement lease. Xie Bo and Zhang Jiahao led by example, and in the short 20 days since the founding of their charity, they pulled off this unique event on the 6th of June.

212881682832350694819647265141407173796Immediately after finishing their first successful event, they plunged into preparing for the next event, Creative Mask Painting! Tong Xin Youth Charity wants to encourage everyone to use their creative juices to paint something encouraging about the COVID-19 situation, both in China and around the world, to spread a positive message and offer hope. Winning entries will be printed on mask boxes to be donated to parts of China, Europe, and the Americas. People can learn more by following 鈥淎ll for Hope鈥 on WeChat.

qrTong Xin Youth Charity members are here to make a difference, and they want their kindness to go a long way, and last a long time. They will keep coming up with new activities every month, and we hope that each one is more exciting than the last.

Most importantly, we would like to thank the young members of Tong Xin Youth Charity for their courage in stepping forward and helping. Keep it up!
