Over the Moon

Over the Moon
By Karen Wang

TP 202001 slangbang 01Since she was a little child, Jessica has always wanted to go to Harvard Law School and become a renowned lawyer. To realize her dream, Jessica has worked hard to be at the top of her class, excel in her extracurricular activities, and achieve a near perfect LSAT score. Now, she鈥檚 anxiously awaiting to hear back from Harvard on whether or not she鈥檚 been accepted. On Sunday, she meets one of her best friends, Laura, for coffee.

鈥淗ow are things going?鈥 Laura asks Jessica, as she casually sips her coffee.

鈥淧retty good, I鈥檝e been quite busy鈥, Jessica responds.

鈥淪till anxiously waiting for your Harvard admissions decision, eh?鈥 Laura playfully asks.

鈥淵es! You already know where you鈥檙e headed to for college, but it鈥檚 killing me that I haven鈥檛 heard back from them yet.鈥 Jessica responds dejectedly.

鈥淲ell, it may be good that you haven鈥檛 heard from them yet! I know a bunch of my friends have already gotten their rejection letters from Harvard鈥, Laura encourages Jessica gently.

"Even so, it鈥檒l be good if I hear back soon鈥, Jessica gently sighs.

As the morning wore on, the girls continued to chat about a variety of other things going on in their lives, when Jessica gets a call from her Mom.

鈥淗ey Mom! I鈥檓 having coffee with Laura at the moment, what鈥檚 up?鈥

鈥淲ait, what?鈥 Jessica excitedly jumps up from her seat. 鈥淥kay, I鈥檓 heading home right now!鈥

鈥淲hat鈥檚 the matter?鈥 Laura asks.

鈥淚t鈥檚 here!! The letter!!!! I鈥檓 headed straight home now鈥, Jessica grabs her bag and prepares to leave.

鈥淥h my gosh. Good luck!鈥 Laura waves, as Jessica makes her way out of the coffee shop.

Back home, Jessica anxiously takes the admissions letter from her Mom and slowly rips it open.

As she scans the letter, she realises that she鈥檚 been admitted into the school of her dreams.

鈥淢om, I got in!鈥 Jessica exclaims, as tears ran down her cheeks.

鈥淐ongratulations Jessica, you鈥檝e worked so hard!鈥

鈥淚鈥檓 absolutely over the moon right now, I can鈥檛 believe that my childhood dream has finally come true! I鈥檓 now one step closer to becoming a lawyer!鈥

In this case, Jessica isn鈥檛 actually going to outer space and over the moon. What Jessica is trying to say, is that she鈥檚 absolutely thrilled and excited that she鈥檚 been admitted into Harvard University鈥檚 School of Law.

There isn鈥檛 exactly a Chinese phrase that is synonymous with the English one. However, an equivalent translation would be銆岄潪甯搁珮鍏淬峟膿ich谩ng g膩ox矛ng. This is very similar to 鈥榦ver the moon鈥 and essentially translates to extremely happy or ecstatic.
