Walk along any street in Beijing and you will hear the sounds of Beijing Opera. Beijing Opera can be traced back to 1790 when four troupes from Anhui Province arrived in the city and performed. In the decades since those beginnings the performance has become 鈥楤eijingized鈥 in that they are adapted in their libretto singing, spoken parts and the use of rhyme. it is best to learn the meaning of the painted faces to better understand the roles being portrayed. Red represents command, loyal and brave. Black is neutral in addition to be lionhearted and sharp sighted. Blue and green faces are also neutral, while yellow and white faces are derogatory and symbolize fierce or cunning men. Gold and silver faces are used to display mystery. The shape of the face can also be symbolic to convey evil mindedness.

Another Cultural Tradition of Beijing

Tea Houses
Beijing has hundreds of tea houses, where some tea houses offer nothing more than a place to sit and drink some tea, while others employ a ceremony and a form of entertainment. Whatever the tea house, it is a good place to relax and take in some local culture.

Santosa Tea Garden
Santosa Tea Garden is located on Waiguanxiejie on the North 2nd Ring Road and close to Liuyin Park. The tea house has seating for 500 and also serves Southeast Asian cuisine. Every evening, singers perform songs from 8.30pm until 11pm. The songs are reminiscing from days of an earlier era. Within the tea house are several olds curios, including old phonographs and oil fuelled lamps that, together with the music, give the feeling you have been taken back into the 1930s or 40s.

Seven-Bowl Tea House
This tea house is located at 30 Baishiqiao in Haidian District and just 100m to the east of the south gate of the China Academy of Agriculture. It is a tea house full of classic Chinese style serving fragrant tea in jade-white or jade-green tea sets. One of the highlights here is the performance of a tea ceremony.

Zhang Yiyuan Tea Store
The Zhang Yiyuan Tea Store was founded in 1925 in this old tea store on Zhongguancun North Street in Haidian District. The Chinese name of the store, when literally translated, means 鈥榃hen a year begins, everything looks fresh and gay.鈥 Services offered here include tea, a tea ceremony, customs involving tea, tea cookies and literary performances.

Minghui Tea House
Located at the Temple of Great Awakening (Dajuesi), Bel鈥檃nhe in Haidian District, the Minghui Tea House serves tea from Taiwan in tasting sessions and tea ceremonies. The wide range of teas on offer here include woolong, longjing, jasmine and green tea. At the weekends the tea ceremonies are completed with the addition of tea cookies.
