Pompeii 02Archaeology and mysteries of past lovers can't miss this exhibition at the Tianjin museum. From September 21st to December 14th 2018, and under the name of 鈥淧ompeii - The Infinite Life鈥, Tianjin museum displays 120 works and artifacts from the first century A.D., of this ancient Roman city. After the destruction of Pompeii due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the successive generations have preserved the remains of the city as it was at the very moment of the volcano blasts, making it a unique document of the Greco roman life.

Divided into different sections, the exhibition is a journey back to the life of around 20.000 habitants who were living in Pompeii and its surrounding towns, during the first century. The urban planning is irregular. It seems that the city grew in at least two stages, the 鈥渙riginal鈥 or old city and the rest attached to it gradually.

The walls were decorated with frescoes portraying scenes of ancient mythology. Statues in bronze, gold or marble also followed the Roman artistic canons. The nude as well as figures wearing long robes are very distinctive of this artistic period in the Greco roman culture. Jewels, pottery, fishing and kitchen tools and some other objects of the daily life in Ancient Pompeii are on display. It is amazing how even the food that was usually part of the table has been preserved all through the years. The bread in western cultures can be similar to what rice is in the Chinese cuisine. A loaf of burned bread and other kinds of food are also exhibited.

Pompeii 06But the most remarkable pieces in this exhibition are the 鈥渃aldarium鈥 (caldarium is the hot room of a Roman baths) from the Villa della Pisanella in Boscoreale, and the 鈥渂alneum鈥 which is a unique piece of hydraulic work in Ancient Rome. Water supply was very important in the society at that time. Life of the city changed drastically when the aqueduct was connected and the water was continuously running on street fountains, supplying water to the whole city. A very intricate network of pipes was found during archeological excavations. In Ancient Greek and Rome the culture of public baths was deeply rooted in the society. In Pompeii there were several public baths located in different parts of the city. The upper classes鈥 families installed bathtubs in their own house and through a complex mechanism of valves received hot and cold water.

Located about 5 miles away from Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii grew year after year, getting closer and closer to the still active volcano. An earthquake in 62 A.D. devastated the city but didn't scare its citizens who were enjoying the good weather and sophisticated life that Pompeii provided. The fatal eruption started the afternoon of 24th August in the year 79 A.D. Fragments of ash and volcanic debris rapidly covered the city and shrouded it in darkness and panic. On the morning of the 25th volcanic gases reached the city walls, engulfing at least 2000 citizens.

It was in 1748 when a group of explorers looking for treasures found Pompeii buried in ashes. The excavations have continued till the 21st century using more and more sophisticated tools to preserve the remains.

For this occasion the Naples National Archeological Museum (MANN), is taking Pompeii to five museums in China, the Archeology museum of Chengdu, the Qinshihuang Mausoleum museum, the Tianjin museum, the Wuhan museum, and a fifth not having been determined yet.
