033Caroline Garcia is a woman blessed with plenty of courage and self-confidence, and she has demonstrated both during the final of 2018 Tianjin Open. But she seemed to have been doubled this courage as she went into the second set super aggressive, and using her experience from years of participating in tournaments to score big.

This entire year has been a grind for France's Caroline Garcia, who had many lackluster performances marked with first round losses and being out-powered by opponents she had previously defeated. Competition and time were running out for the French woman to gain back some momentum that she had lost since she won back-to-back Asian titles last year at Wuhan and Beijing, as well as qualifying for the WTA Finals in Singapore.

038Did she take things for granted? She had thought this year would be different but she wasn't able to defend her title and her frustrations mounted. Competition and time were running out for Garcia to come up with a trophy, but she proved her skill and talents when she entered the Tianjin Open.

Throughout the tournament she dug deep, managing to never break a set throughout the five rounds. But getting into the final with Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova, who's captured 11 career singles titles and was the former WTA no. 1 player, made Garcia grow more determined to play smart tennis and make it count.

It was clear to see the relief and joy on Caroline Garcia's face at finally having come through with a win. The Tianjin title is the sixth in Garcia's career.

039How important is this championship for you?
It's very nice for me to have won a title again, because the feeling after match point is something very special. It's been a long, hard road in playing lots of tournaments with not as much satisfaction and that's what you're working on all year long - to get this trophy in your hand.

How did you approach the final match of 2018 Tianjin Open against Karolina Pliskova?
It was really the ideal finale. A final is the hardest match of the week. Playing Pliskova who is ranked among the top 10, and has played in the Singapore Masters, it was really a match where I had to give my best and I played my best tennis. I had prepared well and was very motivated. I went right back into the match and it helped me to hold. Throughout the match it was very intense and was really very high level.

0394After your loss in Wuhan and Beijing what state of mind were you in?
After Wuhan (defeat at the start), it was more difficult than it was in Beijing. It was a match where I had opportunities and I did not grab them. There were ups and downs during the match. In Beijing, I have performed better in the past. I lost to Sabalenka, a player who was very confident and played very well (in 8th 5-7, 7-6.6-0) while I was in front throughout the game. I could have finished, but missed out on a little something to conclude.

In my level of play, there were some very interesting points. I was moving well ... Obviously, I was disappointed to lose after having gained control of the game, but it motivated me, and made me more determined for the future. I had interesting discussions with my dad (Louis-Paul Garcia, who is also my coach). He helped me to keep striving towards these last tournaments. There was experience to be gained. He pushed me to work on my game, to go further. It paid off. Over the days, I have progressed in this tournament. I played a very good match against (Karolina) Pliskova to win this title.

webwxgetmsgimgAfter your victory, before the awards ceremony, in your chair, you shed some tears.
When you win a title, there is this special feeling after the match ball. These are emotions that are very difficult to describe. This year has been very difficult. I went through so many emotions throughout the year. Over the recent weeks, I had opportunities in my matches and could not capitalize on them. It was very hard mentally for me to go back, to regain positivism, to believe in what I was doing ... Winning this title represents a lot of things for me and it is also very important to share it with people who help constantly.

webwxgetmsgimg 5What is your coaching plan for next year? Your father is a great help, but are you planning to reinforce the team with someone else?
It is true that we have always been open, today we have a great team around us, and training is not just about my dad and me. There are many people who accompany us. We have always been open to seeking outside help. For the moment, we have not yet thought about next year. We are really focused on the present. We want to enjoy this victory. At the end of the season, we will rest quietly and will think about what to do next.

In your life what is it that has had the most influence in your career?
My family is the most important thing in my life. Without their support, I would never have been a professional tennis player for sure.

webwxgetmsgimg 1Caroline Garcia is flying high, now that she's gotten at least one title this season, and looks forward to the New Year with similar aspirations and more victories.

Thank you Caroline, for being so gentle and patient with us during this interview. It was a pleasure to know you and your father. Your family is a great support and it is the foundation of your tennis and your life. This principle makes you a fantastic person and we also hope the best woman tennis player in the world soon.
