A Shrine to Culinary Greatness:

1Temple Restaurant Beijing has quickly become a landmark culinary destination in China鈥檚 capital. Arguably Beijing鈥檚 best restaurant for international cuisine it has won numerous awards and accolades for not only its food, but also its level of service, location and even remarkably, for such a high-level establishment, value for money.

 

The restaurant is set within the walls of a 600-year-old temple complex a stone鈥檚 throw away from the Forbidden City. The conversion is an impressive balance of the old and new.

 

The entrance, tucked away down a non-descript hutong, sits beneath ancient beams. On arrival, you are led to a new, light and modern dining area with towering ceilings. From the moment you walk in, the staff delivers the kind of service that kills you with kindness.

Once seated, the real spoiling begins as you are treated to a number of complimentary bites from the kitchen that keeps coming throughout your meal. Standout dishes include a masterful butter poached lobster served with crab, sage, toasted pumpkin seeds and sea urchin.

 

For meat-lovers try the herb roasted lamb loin with cous cous, merguez, okra and cumin mint yogurt.While the prices at Temple certainly aren鈥檛 cheap, for what you get, there simply is no place better. The restaurant offers brilliant two-to five-course dinner menus for 248CNY, 348CNY or 428CNY. Even more impressive is the three-course lunch menu that changes every two weeks for 135CNY. Weekends offer an amazingly indulgent brunch that is worth the short train ride from Tianjin.


Five courses will set you back 298CNY/person, while a sumptuous eight course affair costs 368CNY/person. Dishes include a selection of fresh seafood, a choice of deliciously warming soups and a number of twists on classics such as the steak tartare, potato terrine and cherry vinegar infused vegetables.

Don鈥檛 forget to finish it all off with one of their delightfully delicious deserts. Choose from a rich and creamy chocolate cake with chestnuts and rum ice cream or wrap your lips around a tart and refreshing lemongrass panna cotta with berry compote. Add another 195/295CNY for wine pairings to make it a truly unforgettable end to the weekend. Fancy a bottle to share? About a dozen bottles of fine wines are priced 300CNY or under.


For those with money to burn you can now also hire out one of Temple鈥檚 private dining rooms or their brand new events space Copper. Chef tasting menus come in a little under 1,000CNY/person. If you are in Beijing for work or shopping, stop by for a great value lunch. Better yet, if you have nothing to do on a Sunday or are looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion head to Temple Restaurant Beijing. There simply is no place better!
