Styled as 鈥淧olo鈥檚 Ultimate Playground鈥, the spectacular topography of Tianjin lends itself perfectly for providing a stunning setting in which to spend an afternoon marvelling at the athletic prowess of both man and horse. Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club has grown in popularity among visiting players and spectators alike. Its explosion into the international arena has come at a dizzying pace and the club is now hosting major international tournaments.

Tianjin鈥檚 only and China鈥檚 largest and most prestigious polo club ranks among the top 10 best Polo Clubs in the world. Located in Tianjin鈥檚 most desirable new address, it is set amidst a 222-acre private estate of rolling lawns, manicured gardens and sparkling fountains. Apart from polo, there are many other facilities to be relished at TGMPC - equestrian classes inclusive of dressage and show jumping, riding classes, and pony club for kids under 12 years of age. The club has 305 stables - a comfortable home and suitable environment for your horse to be managed by a team from England and Argentina. There are also customized feeding plans that will support your horse鈥檚 condition.

Polo is beauti卢ful, not just as a social spectacle but as a grand phenomenon of true sportsmanship pursuing perfection of intellect and agility. How many scenes in sports can equal the sight of some卢one like John Fisher charging down the field, his horse radiant, lurching through the pack, and scoring? His investment and guidance throughout the 7 years has seen the club undertake vast infrastructure works, turning it into a haven for all who visit. It鈥檚 only natural to wonder ''Where do I sign up for polo lessons?'' The answer - in Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club!

Can we have an insight into the activities at TGMPC and the events which you host?
We have a summer season that runs from May till the end of October. We play 2 tournaments a month, from beginner level all the way up to the highest. We also conducted the first ladies鈥 tournament in China last October. We invite top universities in the world annually. Not only does everyone get an opportunity to play with the best but also to discuss the prospects of studying in such an establishment one day. We have also hosted the FIP Snow Polo World Cup for 6 consecutive years.

In your assessment, how do you think TGMPC stands out from other clubs in China?
There are no polo fields in China apart from ours that are laser levelled. It's like a snooker table. It's easier for us to train horses because we have a range of world-class sporting facility to do it in - two international standard polo fields, practice fields, eventing course, cross-country, indoor and outdoor dressage, show jumping, stabling for 200+ horses, numerous paddocks, good vets - and this makes our work easier and a lot more enjoyable for those that chose TGMPC. We have 6 Argentine coaches 12 months of the year. If you want to be taught by the best, this is the best place to come. There is no other club in China that has 7 full time coaches鈥 year-round.

An Argentine vet was with us for three years and helped teaching the local vets. We have two onsite vets. They've been working in the horse industry in China for the last 17 years. Previously they worked under Australian, Argentine and American vets. We also teach our students stable management, horse husbandry, meal plans and other aspects and hopefully they'll follow on after we've left.

Anybody that owns a horse around China can bring the horse to stable them. We offer full livery here, looking after your horse, preparing them for you to ride. We do a half livery, we provide stable and the basics and you have your own staff to look after the horse. It鈥檚 a hotel service for horses 12 months of the year.

Being the only polo club in the world that has a five-star hotel we arrange polo holidays. We have people from all over the world joining our polo clinic. It's a one-stop-shop.

We also have reciprocal deals with numerous polo clubs around the world. Any member can reap the benefits of those facilities.

What does a good polo training look like and to what do you ascribe as most important?
Safety comes first. Most people have never seen a horse until they arrive for their first lesson. First step is contact with the horse from ground and after familiarizing we get you on the horse. All our classes are one-on-one to ensure maximum focus on clients. Some children may take longer than others to get confident, which depends on the number of classes per week and your natural ability.

Learning to ride and play polo is a slow process. First is learning to ride. Once you can ride, hitting the ball is the easy part. We make sure you leave after our lesson with some advice and always finish on a positive note. Having said that, it's been amazing to witness how quickly we've had beginners playing polo. With less than 12 months riding once or twice a week, we have some playing in the beginner鈥檚 tournaments.

What advice can you give beginners to help them improving their playing skills?
Commitment is a must And if you want to achieve anything in life it's Practice! Practice! Practice! There is no other way around it. My team of coaches and I aim to create professional Chinese polo players to represent their country in the world cup. It's developed in Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore. There's no reason why we cannot cultivate it here. That's my dream, that's what I came here to do.

Adults want to learn polo as a hobby and stress reliever. When you鈥檙e out on the field, you can be thinking about the stresses of life, but it all goes away. You think only polo. It is like the get-away car. It's a relaxation, there's nothing better. There's a quote 鈥淪omething about the outside of the horse that is great for the inside of the person鈥. Tianjin is lucky to have a place like this. There's nowhere better for parents to get the kids off that iPad and engage in outdoor activity.

How does a novice polo player benefit from visiting TGMPC?
Polo has taken me around the world. I've been to some amazing places 鈥 polo clubs, huge villas and even met some amazing people. Winston Churchill once said, 鈥淎 polo handicap is your passport to the world.鈥 and he's correct. It鈥檚 a good leveller. It works on your ability to work in a team, you've got to strategize, and you have a bond with an animal. Many universities/colleges around the world have riding and polo as part of their curriculum. It's another way to bolster your credentials for admission to top-tier universities. It's also a great sport to play where the whole family can take part. Whether children are playing, parents are playing, or grandparents watching, it鈥檚 a perfect weekend activity and a fantastic way to bond. Here we have the hotel, spa, restaurants, bars 鈥 the whole package from A-Z.

What plans do you have for the future of TGMPC? Which highlights can your guests expect in 2018?
We're trying to hold more tournaments next year, especially for beginners. Ladies鈥 polo is growing around the world. We're trying to foster that here. Many more camps, lessons on equestrian and pony club and give more people, whether it's local or expats the opportunity to ride and enjoy the facilities the club has to offer.

We offer lessons at certain price-packages. There's no reason to be worried that it's expensive. If you want to ride once a week that鈥檚 a certain price. If you want to play polo every day, it's a different price. The doors are open to everybody.

In addition to being the DGM you also work as a stable director and coach at TGMPC 鈥 a lot of work. What motivates you and what do you love most about your work?
I love most the horses. I love to teach. I love to see their faces light-up when you teach them something and it clicks. I love the staff, their commitment and enthusiasm to their jobs. They work long hours and are committed to the welfare of the horses. I want polo to develop. I want China to see polo like I see polo.

You鈥檝e won numerous awards, but which are the most memorable?
I've played polo for a very long time. In England, I won the biggest tournament at the age of 17, the Gold Cup at my home club Cowdray Park Polo Club. That holds a special place in my heart. My name along with my brothers is on that cup and hopefully one day my children and their children鈥檚 names will be on that trophy. I鈥檝e won the Snow Polo World Cup for Hong Kong twice and a third time as coach. I played and won the Prince of Wales and Warwickshire Polo Cup. I played in India for England, Argentina, Singapore and won numerous times.

I've played the Queen's cup and the Cartier tournament in England two years in a row and met the Queen and Prince Philip. I've played a few charity games with Prince Harry, Prince William, Prince Charles and Facundo Pieres, one of the best players in the world. My main achievement is probably running the FIP Snow Polo World Cup for 6 consecutive years. I've been very lucky to have enjoyed such an amazing life and met some amazing people.
