Jenny and Penny are identical twins with very busy parents. Though they look almost the same, the two little girls have very different personalities. Jenny, on one hand, always listens to what she is told, likes to read and never breaks rules -she is the typical good kid. Penny, on the other hand, likes to dig things out of the mud in the front yard, climb trees and goes against everything she is told - she is the typical bad kid. The two ladies can get along very well on one day, and then turn into oil and water on another.
One Sunday, Jenny and Penny’s Mum baked a chocolate cake for her best friend’s birthday which was the next day. She made sure the twins understand that they could not touch the cake.
But the next day when the parents were back at work, the two kids were alone at home with the domestic helper who had to run errands all day. When the helper was out doing grocery shopping for the family, Penny sneaked into the kitchen and ate half the cake by herself.
When Mum came home from work that night, she found out that half the cake was gone! She then summoned the two kids and asked who did the deed.
“It’s Jenny, Mum. I was out playing with other kids outside the whole day today!” Penny lied.
Jenny, on the other hand, had no rebuttal because she was indeed at home and she has never been good at lying. The domestic helper couldn’t be her alibi either. Therefore, all she managed to say was, “Mum, I … um… no…”
Mum believed in Penny and scolded Jenny for a good 10 minutes. Afterwards, Jenny burst into tears out of anger and yelled at Penny, “Don’t you dare passing the buck to me again! Take your own responsibility if you did something wrong!”
The direct Chinese translation of “pass the buck” would be 鎺ㄨ璐d换tu墨 w臎i z茅 r猫n. And as the Chinese like to say, “A man with shoulders does not pass the buck,” but of course this slang applies to both male and female. The next time you want to do something sneaky, know that you have to take responsibility for yourself. Adults don’t pass the buck!
