SpaceX and Tesla started to build a revolutionary brand new ultra-high speed train system named Hyperloop a few years ago. This train system will allow us to travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles or from London to Edinburgh in 30 minutes or even faster. Though it looks like something that is only possible in a science-fiction novel, this advanced transportation system is getting closer and closer to reality. It takes small steps toward reality every year so we can expect that Elon Musk’s dream of super-fast travel through a tube comes true in the near future.

Let's see what Hyperloop actually is and how it works in more detail.

What is Hyperloop?

TP_201708_Future_03.jpg

Essentially Hyperloop is freight and/or passenger transportation by train which involves a tube i.e., the system of tubes. Air is pumped out from this sealed tube in order to maintain a near-vacuum condition. In this way a pod may travel through the tube free of friction and air resistance, thus conveying people or freight at nearly the speed of sound.

This futuristic train system is envisioned by a joint team of SpaceX and Tesla Motors. Mr. Elon Musk, chief executive officer of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, has drawn attention of many by revealing the Alpha concept of Hyperloop in August 2013. Actually his version of the Hyperloop concept was first mentioned in public in 2012. He incorporated a reduced-pressure system of tubes which lets the pressurized capsule move on air bearings powered by air compressors and linear induction motors.

Hyperloop is mostly based on very high-speed transit system (VHST) which was first proposed in 1972. It combines a low-pressure transit tube and magnetic levitation train. While evolving some original ideas, Hyperloop still uses pods or capsules and tunnels to ride from place to place which was originally developed in VHST. Musk compares it with a vacuum tube system that some buildings use to transfer documents from one place to another.

How fast will it be?

Hyperloop is meant to be an alternative to air travel for small distances but it's going to be much cleaner than existing flights and much faster than today's rail networks. It is not about running at the highest possible speed as we are not capable of coping with high gravitational forces that occur as a result of extremely high speeds. In this case, it would come to turns which are not suitable for traveling.

Suggested speeds for journeys are slightly more than 1,100 kilometers per hour. Yet there are certain implications that must be taken into consideration when it comes to the short "stop-start" journeys. Those include deceleration and acceleration sensation that travelers would face.

How much will it cost?

Dirk Ahlborn, the transportation technologies CEO of Hyperloop, said that a passenger ticket from Los Angeles to San Francisco will cost about $30. As he stated, such a price should let the company pay back the initial costs in around 8 years. You should not take it for granted because it's still not certain whether this will be the final ticket price.

When will Hyperloop come into circulation?

It's still hard to say when the Hyperloop will arrive and be available for passengers. SpaceX has already built a one-mile test track close to Hawthorne in southwestern California. The good news is that the first trial has been successful.

The so-called Hyperloop One was tested on May 12th this year, making history as the world's first company that carried out a test with a "full-scale Hyperloop." That test has integrated a wide range of Hyperloop components, such as levitation, propulsion, vacuum, sled, structures, control systems and tube.

The next big date was July 12th, 2017. On that date, the company divulged the pictures of first-generation prototype of the pod. This 8.5 meter long pod is going to be used next month in Nevada desert at the so-called DevLoop test. The tube is around 3.3 meters in diameter and about 500 meters long. The primary goal of this test is to examine aerodynamics of the pod. In addition, this test track will also be a preparation for the first commercial installation of Hyperloop One which is going to run between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It is estimated that roughly 4,000 vehicles travel between these two big cities in the Middle East on a daily basis. The Hyperloop offers a transportation option that is much safer and cheaper to maintain. By the way, it can significantly reduce travel time. For example, the 160 kilometers (about 100 miles) distance could be crossed by Hyperloop in about 12 minutes only!

The date of release is not yet given by Elon Musk. He has merely announced that Hyperloop will certainly be made. However, every single year, his dream of a pod that travels through a giant tube is one step closer to reality. It is just a matter of time when it will actually appear.
