If the youth are wise, society will be wise;

If the youth are rich, society will be rich;

If the youth are strong, society will be strong;

If the youth are independent, society will be independent;

If the youth are free, society will be free;

If the youth progress, society will progress.

-- The Young China by Liang Qichao, 1900

China is the only country which has experienced phenomenal urbanization wherein over the last 30 years 300 million people have relocated to cities. With such extraordinary past and present, China today is witnessing an immense public health challenge - Smoking and Alcohol consumption.

Benefits of quitting alcoholism are:

Results of alcohol abstinence can be overwhelmingly positive:

Addictive nature of Nicotine: Nicotine is one of the main constituents of cigarette smoke. It is absorbed readily and can reach brain within 10 seconds. In the brain, nicotine stimulates the release of adrenalin, a neurotransmitter creating a sense of pleasure and energy. It is this sense of pleasure and energy which leads to addiction to cigarette smoking.

Addictive nature of Alcohol: Alcohol triggers the release of endorphins - naturally occurring opioids – thus provoking a feel-good factor and dopamine neurotransmitter that produces a feeling of satisfaction. The addictive nature of alcohol can be linked to the release of opioids in areas of the brain involved in the rewarding process.

Mixing Nicotine and Alcohol: Taking nicotine and alcohol together can amplify the pleasure and rewarding effects. Alcohol and nicotine jointly can increase the risk of cancer by many folds and also lead to nutritional deficiencies.

Fix your goal

Quitting smoking and alcohol is challenging but not impossible. No one can make you quit these addictions except for you and your strong will. It is all about your health, well-being and choices. Also you save a significant amount of money from not buying cigarettes and drinks. Once ready, set realistic goals. To meet your main goal, set smaller goals or milestones.

Identify the triggering factors that make you smoke. The reasons could be emotional, social, habitual or for pleasure. Knowing your reason for these addictions can help you plan your strategy for quitting smoking and alcoholism.

Quitting one at a time or both at a time?

There is no right answer to this question. Depending upon the attitude, pattern and habits one can decide to quit one at a time or both together. If quitting one makes the other addiction worse then you will need to quit both at once.

Action Plan

Once you have decided on quitting you can ask for help and support from your family and friends. The important people in your life can help you in succeeding and achieving your goal. Keep a quit diary and set a time frame for quitting. You can also talk with your doctor and understand the medications available to help you in this mission. Meanwhile, shift to healthy new habits and plan for coping up with the triggers.

Remember these while coping phase: “WILL”

Nicotine replacement therapies are available in various forms, namely patches, gums, lozenges, inhalers and nasal spray. Withdrawal symptoms can be controlled by using NRT as it releases controlled amount of nicotine sufficient to manage the urges. Various other quit methods can be used in combination to make a suitable strategy for the quit plan.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can range from mild to severe. Mild to moderate symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, trembling hands, sweating and lack of appetite. Severe symptoms include convulsion, confusion and hallucinations. Medical and psychological intervention is required if the patient experiences severe withdrawal symptoms.

Track your progress

Depending upon your goal track your progress, it can be counting the number of cigarettes or smoke-free days. Mark these days and reward yourself for these accomplishments.

Quitting both smoking and alcohol use will involve the same strategy, namely fixing goal, making action plan, seeking advice and finally monitoring and tracking your progress.

Every step counts

From willingness to quit to setting goal and then making action plan and finally following it day by day is what ‘change’ is all about. These steps will lay a foundation for a healthier tomorrow and a healthier you.

It is time now for the government to take stringent steps to control this menace. Overall education and awareness programs are the need of the hour to save people and specially the youth from smoking and alcohol addiction. In addition, the government needs to take a firm stand on tobacco industry and consider public health as main concern. Until there are thorough policy reviews, changes and proper enforcement of laws the situation will worsen further.
